26 October 2011 – From The Atlantic: Toronto has been aggressive about it: they have a new, comprehensive green roof law, the first one in North America.

Like all laws, it’s complicated, but new building permit applications for residential, commercial, and institutional developments must now have green roofs. New industrial developments (as of April 30, 2012) will soon have to be green, also.

The law states a minimum roof size, so it doesn’t apply to gardening sheds. And the larger the roof, the greater the percentage of it will have to be green. People can opt out, but they have to pay toward a fund.

Efforts are already paying off: Green Roofs for Healthy Cities is reporting that the law has resulted in more than 1.2 million square feet of new green space planned on new commercial, institutional, and multi-unit residential developments. It will also keep enough rainwater runoff out of the lakes and rivers to fill fifty Olympic sized swimming pools. It’s reduced the heat island effect and led to an annual energy savings of over 1.5 million KWH for building owners.

And there are still other benefits: opportunities for parks and recreational areas. Birds and bees do well with these changes.

Make sure you ask about our Green Roof Guarantee that lasts for the guaranteed lifetime of the roof membrane.. and beyond!

We only use fully researched and developed green roof technologies (and not make shift builders drainage boards that have no place as part of a green roof system, that we see under failed systems). We also only adhere to the FLL (German standard) and GRO Code (UK) root-zone depths and practices which enables us to roll out lifetime guarantees for the green roof system and vegetation performance.

Please enquire for the full details.

There is no doubt London suffers from floods which cause a great deal of harm to the waterways. Some years ago, before todays accurate Green Roof data, they decided a £3.6 billion tunnel was the answer.

If you added green roof layers to only one third of London’s existing flat roofs it is estimated this will have the equivalent benefit to the proposed tunnel.

• A fraction of the cost.

• A fraction of the upheaval of the construction.

• A fraction of the time to achieve a solution.

And on top of all that..

• better City Cooling

• cleaner environment

• better ecology for birds and insect

• better fuel costs for the building owners or residents

• cooler buildings in summer

• warmer in winter

The tunnel is unlikely to completely prevent flooding and pollution overspill into the Thames. It might be part of the answer. Once you green the flat roofs of London you might just find you only need a small tunnel with less expense. You might find that Greening 2 thirds of London is the way forward.

Surely green roofs for London is cheapest most brilliant way to go before you start boring into the planet?

The payback period for green roofs is getting much shorter, according to a report released by Atmos Consulting. The research also shows that green roofs can save energy and cash for both newbuilds and existing buildings.

The company has reviewed various statistics relating to green roofs and found the benefits include:

insulating buildings and cutting energy costs. Recent studies show green roofs save two litres of fuel oil/m² per year.

cutting the rate of heat absorption through the roof of a building by up to 84%, reducing its temperature and the need for cooling. This leads to further energy savings.

lasting between 2.5 to 3.5 times longer than roofs made from standard materials, reducing roof repair and replacement costs.

reducing urban pollution levels. 1m² of grass roof can remove 0.2kg of airborne particulates every year. They can also store chemicals and pollutants falling in the rain that would otherwise go directly into drainage systems.

helping companies and organisations manage excess water in storms by retaining 50-60% of the total annual runoff volume in an average development, and alleviate flooding issues by retaining 90-100% of the critical first hour of heavy rainfall. This reduces drainage costs.

providing excellent habitation areas for insects, birds and other wildlife, increasing local ecology/biodiversity.

contributing towards government-set sustainability targets (e.g. BREEAM assessments).

Vicky Ward, ecological consultant at Atmos, said: “Green roofs have long been popular with companies that want to better the environment, and go a long way to achieving sustainability targets. Thanks to developing technology the payback periods are becoming much shorter, making green roofs a sound financial investment. We urge anyone developing new properties or renovating existing ones to consider them.”
